Research Notes on Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

The most common treatment for psoriatic arthritis is a combination of medications and exercise.1 For patients who experience moderate pain or trouble with exercise, physical therapy may also be a treatment option.1 Although not common, surgery may be an option for joints that are severely damaged and in need of repair or replacement.1

Fast Facts:

  • Medication options for psoriatic arthritis include NSAIDs and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs such as sulfasalazine, cyclosporine, and methotrexate.2
  • More severe cases of psoriatic arthritis may be treated with tumor necrosis factor drugs.3
  • Home treatments for psoriatic arthritis include rest and the application of heat or cold compresses to swollen joints.2
