The imprint code is the numbers and/or the letters displayed on the side of a pill, capsule, or tablet. The manufacturer assigns the codes and symbols for the medication. Catapres is used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and high blood pressure.

Although not approved by the FDA for these purposes, Catapres has also been used to relieve alcohol withdrawal, as an aid in quitting smoking, to treat diabetic diarrhea, to treat Tourette's Syndrome, to reduce menopausal flushing, and to treat ulcerative colitis.

Men Lose 10 Years of Life to 3 Risk Factors

A thirty-eight year study recently released in the British Medical Journal revealed that men who smoke, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol may lose ten to fifteen years in life expectancy. The Whitehall study was sponsored by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and led by the University of Oxford. The research also concluded that with these risk factors, men were twice as likely to die from other causes besides heart and vascular disease.

Fast Facts:

No women were involved in the study but researchers believe the results would be similar to the outcome of the men.
The study included 18,863 men between the ages of 40 to 69.
First examinations were performed between 1967 to 1970. During the 38 year period, 13,501 died and 4,811 had follow-up examinations in 1997.
Smoking, heart disease, and high cholesterol are three key risk factors for heart disease.
