The meningococcal conjugate vaccine is typically recommended to be given to children and adolescents who are eleven to twelve years of age as part of a routine vaccination schedule. If it is not given at this time, it is recommended to be given between the ages of thirteen and eighteen years. This vaccine is also recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure to meningococcal disease such as college students, international travelers, household contacts, and laboratory workers. The MCV4 (ddMenactra) version of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine is preferred for those between the ages of two and fifty-five years.

Antibiotic Use During Pregnancy and Birth Defects

Researchers studied antibiotics in pregnancy and found common drugs used to treat urinary infections were associated with birth defects. Reassuringly, penicillin, the most-used antibiotic in early pregnancy, appears to be the safest. Mothers of babies with birth defects were more likely than mothers with healthy babies to report taking two types of antibiotics during pregnancy: sulfa drugs (brand names include Thiosulfil Forte and Bactrim) and urinary germicides called nitrofurantoins (brand names include Furadantin and Macrobid).
