Lack of Health Insurance Endangers Children

According to research from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the lack of health insurance may have contributed to approximately 17,000 deaths in hospitalized children. When comparing death rates, researchers found that uninsured children were 60% more likely to die in the hospital than those with insurance. According to the Hopkins researchers, the study, published Oct. 30 in the Journal of Public Health, is one of the largest ever to look at the impact of insurance on the number of preventable deaths and the potential for saved lives among sick children in the United States.

Doctors Support Public Option

A survey of 2,130 U.S. doctors reveals that many doctors favor a public option to supplement private health care. Nearly 63% of doctors supported a mix of public and private insurance, 27% wanted private only, and 10% said they want only public options. Over 55% favored an expansion of the Medicare program so it covers people aged 55 and over, instead of starting at 65.

Fast Facts:

President Obama has vowed to pass health care legislation by the end of the year.

Criticizers have attacked the 900 billion dollar price tag of the legislation and raised questions of a federal takeover of health care.

This survey is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Public Option in Health Plan May Be Dropped

The public option is under scrutiny between the Republicans and Democrats and its importance in health care reform. President Obama states "the public option, whether we have it or we don't have it, is not the entirety of health care reform." The public option is a new government insurance program, which would operate under a national structure cooperating with state affiliates. It would be completely independent from the government except for the three to four billion dollars initially required to start the program. Currently, it is still undecided whether the public option will survive.

Fast Facts:

Supporters of the public option believe the competition created with private insurance companies will ultimately benefit the public.

Republicans are in opposition of the public option due to the possibility of affecting private insurers financially.

The public option has been an essential component in Obama's agenda for health care system overhauling.

Wal-Mart Supports Obama's Health Care Plan

Wal-Mart, the nation's largest private employer, endorsed President Obama's Health Care Plan on June 30, 2009. The health care plan will mandate that employers provide medical coverage to the approximate forty-six million Americans who are uninsured. Wal-Mart currently offers company-provided health care to 1.4 million employees.

Fast Facts:

In 2006, Wal-Mart fought Maryland's efforts to enforce the increase in employer's contributions for health care coverage.

Later, Wal-Mart joined with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Center for American Progress to help the initiative for universal health care coverage by 2012 for all Americans.

Wal-Mart also promoted their own $4 generic drug program.

Under the Obama Administration's proposed plan, large companies would be mandated to provide or contribute to health care coverage for employees. However, it's possible that small businesses may be exempt or pay less.

Obama Health Care Support

Recent polling shows that most Americans support major health care reform, as proposed by President Barack Obama, but many are worried about the costs. Polls also show that people are also concerned about rising health care costs, and the possibility of losing coverage.

Speaking before the American Medical Association on Monday, June 15, 2009, President Barack Obama spoke about his proposal to create a program for taxpayer-funded health care coverage. He said a coalition of U.S. health groups would cut rising costs by $2 trillion over the next decade. Early estimates from the Congressional Budget Office are that the proposed plan will cover an additional 16 million individuals at a cost of $1 trillion dollars.

Obama Health Care Proposals

President Obama hopes to work with Congress to pass comprehensive health reform during his first year in office. The White House says that the Obama Administration is committed to controlling rising health care costs, guaranteeing each American the choice of physician, while assuring high-quality, affordable health care for all.

Fast Facts:

The proposal will cost about $1 trillion over 10 years.

The proposal would be paid for by limiting tax deductions for the wealthiest Americans.

The United States spent approximately $2.2 trillion on health care in 2007, or $7,421 per person.

Obama Health Care Criticism

President Obama recently appeared before the American Medical Association (AMA) to defend a proposal to provide public healthcare. The AMA has been urging Obama to address his reasoning for unnecessary testing, physician referrals, and hospital stays. Obama is requesting urgent action but believes critics will attempt to stop his efforts by using "scare tactics and fear mongering".

Fast Facts:

One of the health plans up for debate will cost more than $1 trillion dollars over a 10 year span, and still leave over 10 million people uninsured.

The AMA is critical of socialized medicine.

The budget office has estimated that those with employer-provided health insurance will decline by at least 10% (15 million people).

Doctors and Obama Health Care Proposal

President Barack Obama spoke before the American Medical Association on Monday, June 15, 2009, about his propoposal to create a program for taxpayer-funded health care coverage. Many doctors do not agree with a government-sponsored health insurance plan. Many favor strengthening and regulating the current private system of health insurance, rather than establishing a new federal insurance option which would compete with private insurers.
Fast Facts:

47 million Americans do not have insurance coverage.
