Anemia Drugs Raise Blood Clot Risks

A recent study has revealed that some medications used to treat anemia, known as erythropoiesis-stimulating medications or ESAs, are associated with an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. ESAs stimulate red blood cell production and are sometimes prescribed to patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.

Warfarin may be metabolized differently by the body if taken with Plavix. NSAID medications can increase the risk of significant bleeding if used while undergoing treatment with Plavix.

Alteplase, dipyridamole, ticlopidine, and urokinase are other blood thinning medications that can negatively interact with Plavix.

A venogram is the gold standard for detecting deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is an x-ray that uses a contrast dye to increase the visibility of veins. A venogram is also used to locate healthy veins for medical surgeries and procedures. Performed in a hospital or clinic, the procedure generally takes approximately thirty to forty-five minutes.
