New Mammogram Recommendations Released

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently issued new mammogram recommendations. The new guidelines recommend that women age forty no longer require yearly mammograms and that women age fifty get mammograms every two years.

Nolvadex and Pregnancy

Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is labeled as a pregnancy category D drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, indicating there is a risk of fetal harm. If you are taking Nolvadex, talk to your doctor before becoming pregnant. Using a non-hormonal form of birth control is recommended while taking this medication and for two months after treatment ends. Nolvadex is used in the treatment and prevention of some types of breast cancer.

According to some research, there are many health benefits associated with pomegranates. Pomegranates have been found to reduce cholesterol, lower the risk of blood clots, and reduce pain associated with arthritis. Other benefits associated with pomegranates include preventing and slowing down Alzheimer's disease, preventing dental plaque, and preventing the development of breast cancer cells.

Pomegranates are very high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and folic acid.
Eating pomegranates can also help prevent heart disease and protect against the development of prostate cancer.

Hand-Foot Syndrome

Hand-foot syndrome is a side effect of chemotherapy that causes a skin reaction that appears on the palms of the hands and/or the soles of the feet. Symptoms of hand-foot syndrome include tingling or numbness, swelling, redness, peeling skin, and tenderness or pain. Blistering can occur if there is no change in treatment.

Fast Facts:

Hand-foot syndrome typically occurs within a few weeks of beginning chemotherapy, although it can appear at any time.
Hand-foot syndrome can be treated by changing treatment, or taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, corticosteroids, and/or vitamin B6.
Hand-foot syndrome may be prevented by changes in activities and clothing, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding caffeine.

Diabetes Drug Fights Breast Cancer

New research suggests adding metformin, a commonly used diabetes drug, to conventional chemotherapy may help treat breast cancer. Researchers suggest that metformin may even delay the recurrence of this cancer. In mice, metformin suppressed the cancer stem cells that are thought to aid tumor progression.

Fast Facts:

In mice treated with chemotherapy alone, tumors regrew. There was no regrowth in mice who received both drugs.
Alone, metformin is ineffective in treating tumors.
This study is published in the September 2009 online issue of Cancer Research.

Mitoxantrone and Pregnancy

The use of mitoxantrone during pregnancy is not recommended. There is a risk of your child having a birth defect if mitoxantrone is used during pregnancy. In animal studies, there was evidence of a slow in fetal growth due to mitoxantrone. Mitoxantrone has been classified as a Pregnancy Category D drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Remission

Remission occurs when a disease is responding well to treatment and symptoms disappear. This term commonly refers to cancer or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though other conditions can go into remission. Remission does not mean that the disease is cured, and symptoms can reoccur at some point in the future.

Partial remission is the term used when most, but not all, of the symptoms have improved.
Complete remission is the term used when symptoms disappear completely.
Remssions can last anywhere from several weeks to many years.
