Research Notes on Zanamivir
Zanamivir is a medication that is used in the treatment of flu symptoms, as well as a flu preventative.1 Zanamivir has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in children and adults, and is sold under the brand name Relenza. Common side effects associated with zanamivir use include: dizziness, nasal irritation, and joint pain. Side effects such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, skin rash, itching, and difficulty swallowing warrant a call to your physician and possibly emergency medical treatment.1
Fast Facts:
- Zanamivir is administered as a powder which is inhaled once or twice daily.2
- Zanamivir is not meant to replace a yearly flu vaccine. It may, however, interfere with the vaccine, so be certain your physician is aware of the status of your vaccination.1
- Keep zanamivir in a cool, dry environment (not in the bathroom).1
