Research Notes on Zanaflex and Pregnancy
Women who are pregnant or who are considering pregnancy should consult with their physician before using Zanaflex. The FDA has listed Zanaflex as a category C medication. Although the medication has not been thoroughly studied in pregnant women, animal studies have revealed an increased risk to the fetus when administered in high dosages.1
Fast Facts:
- In some cases, the benefits of Zanaflex to the mother outweigh potential risks to the fetus and it may be continued throughout the pregnancy.2
- It is unclear whether Zanaflex is excreted in the breast milk of nursing mothers.2
- Zanaflex is a brand name of the generic medication tizanidine that is used to treat muscle spasticity.2
