Research Notes on X-Ray Technician


An x-ray technician (also called a radiologic technologist or radiographer) is a health care professional who takes x rays and administers nonradioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes. X-ray technicians are responsible for preparing patients for x-rays by explaining the procedure, removing articles that cannot pass through the x-ray machine, and positioning patients so that the appropriate parts of the body can be x-rayed.1 They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection, and basic patient care.2

  • Experienced x-ray technicians can perform more complex imaging procedures such as fluoroscopies.1
  • X-ray technicians can specialize in performing CT scans and MRIs.1
  • Training to become an x-ray technician can range from a one year certificate program, a two year associate degree, or a four year bachelor’s degree. A two year associate degree is the most common.1
  • Employment for x-ray technicians is expected to increase by fifteen percent between 2006 and 2016.1
  • X-ray technicians earn between $32,000 and $68,000 per year.1
