Research Notes on Wound Care
The first step in wound care is to control the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound. After the bleeding is controlled, the wound should be cleaned with soap and water. To prevent infection, wounds should not be dressed until they are fully cleaned. If the bleeding cannot be controlled, or the wound is deep, seek medical attention as soon as possible.1
Fast Facts:
- Scrapes, cuts, puncture wounds are all types of wounds.2
- Wounds should be washed 4 times a day to prevent infection.2
- If wounded, it is important to have a tetanus shot if it has been longer than 5 years since your last one.2
- All wounds over 1/2 inch deep should be examined by a physician.2
- All bite wounds warrant medical attention as soon as possible.2
