Research Notes on Women and Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the end result of the accumulation of atheromatous plaques within the walls of the arteries of the myocardium (the muscle of the heart). These atheromatous plaques may rupture and (along with the activation of the blood clotting system) start limiting blood flow to the heart muscle. Women’s blood vessels are exposed to changing levels of estrogen throughout their lives, first during regular menstrual cycles and later during and after menopause. Estrogen affects how blood vessels narrow and widen and how they respond to injury, so changes in estrogen levels mean changes in the reactivity of the blood vessels. ...read more from Wikipedia
