Research Notes on Willow Bark for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Willow bark (Salix alba) is possibly the oldest known medicinal herb used to treat inflammation and pain, making it an easy choice in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms for hundreds of years. The inner bark of the white willow tree contains salicin, which becomes salicylic acid in the body. Salicylic acid is a compound used in modern aspirin. Although willow bark works slower in the body than aspirin, its pain and inflammation relieving effects are reportedly longer lasting.1
Fast Facts:
- White willow bark is reported to offer a lower chance of bleeding when used to treat chronic joint pain than aspirin.1
- Willow bark can negatively interact with some rheumatoid arthritis medications, so speak to your physician or trained holistic health care provider before using herbal supplements in addition to modern medications.2
- According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, willow bark has not been proven to reduce inflammation in humans. However, one clinical trial reported a decrease in pain in osteoarthritis patients.3
