Research Notes on Williams Syndrome
Williams syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, which results in cognitive and developmental problems. A particular cardiovascular disease called supravalvular aortic stenosis is often seen in Williams syndrome, causing narrowing of the arteries. It appears to be due to a missing gene which produces elastin, a protein that permits the tissues in the body as well as the blood vessels to stretch.
Fast Facts:
- Williams syndrome occurs in less than 1 of 20,000 births.
- Some symptoms of Williams syndrome are cognitive defects like trouble with space and numbers.
- People with Williams syndrome often have gregarious personalities, and are often referred to as having "cocktail-party syndrome."
