Research Notes on Who Discovered the Influenza Virus

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates is the author of the first record of human influenza symptoms. But the orthomyxoviridae family of viruses, of which the influenza virus is a member, was not discovered until 1931 by Richard Shope. Following his work, a British research team led by Patrick Laidlaw was able to isolate the virus from humans in 1933.1

Fast Facts:

  • The first influenza vaccine was developed in 1944 by Thomas Francis, Junior.1
  • The most devastating flu pandemic ever was the flu pandemic of 1918 that began in Spain.1
  • In 2005, a group of scientists recovered a strain of the 1918 influenza virus in the body of a woman that had been frozen in Alaska.2
  • Such a discovery allows scientists to see how the influenza virus has changed since then, and will hopefully aid in preventing future pandemics.2
