Research Notes on White Blood Cells

Made in the bone marrow, white blood cells protect the body from infection. When a virus or bacteria enters the body, the white blood cells fight by attacking and trying to destroy it. The body will produce more white blood cells in response to fighting some infections.1

Fast Facts:

  • Bigger than red blood cells.2
  • A normal total count is between 4,000 and 11,000 cells per microliter.3
  • Lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils are the five major types of white blood cells.2
