Influenza - also known as the flu, avian flu, swine flu, and pandemic flu - is caused by the type A, type B, and type C influenza viruses.1 Hippocrates identified the symptoms similar to influenza over 2400 years ago but it was not formerly recorded.2 The first recorded history of influenza occurred in 1580 which infected Asia, Africa, Europe, and America.3

  • The term "influenza" is from the Italian word meaning "influence" and was coined in 1357 AD.4
  • Flu pandemics include: Asiatic (Russian) Flu (1889-1890), Spanish Flu (1980-1920), Asian Flu (1957-1958), and Hong Kong Flu (1968-1969).2
  • Approximately 20 to 40 million deaths occurred during the Spanish Flu Pandemic (1918-1919); known as the most devastating epidemic recorded.5
  • In 1931, Richard Shope discovered influenza is caused by a virus.2
  • The first crude vaccine was released in the 1940s.4
