Research Notes on What Do Blood Pressure Numbers Mean


When measuring blood pressure the systolic pressure is always listed first and the diastolic pressure is listed last. The systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart is beating. The diastolic pressure is when the heart is resting in between beats.1 These numbers tell if your blood pressure is a normal, low or high. Your blood pressure is affected by the foods you eat, recent activities, if you are stressed, or if you are excited.2

Fast Facts:

  • Normal blood pressure has a systolic pressure of less than 120, and a diastolic pressure of less than 80.2
  • Prehypertension has a systolic pressure between 120-139, and a diastolic pressure between 80-89.2
  • High blood pressure stage 1 has a systolic pressure between 140-159, and a diastolic pressure between 90-99.2
  • High blood pressure stage 2 has a systolic pressure of 160 or higher, and a diastolic pressure of 100 or higher.2
