Research Notes on What Is Gestational Hypertension
Gestational hypertension is high blood pressure that occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy. The cause of gestational hypertension is not known, so there is no known prevention for it. Hypertension during pregnancy is more common in first time pregnancies.1
Fast Facts:
- There is an increased risk of developing preeclampsia if diagnosed with gestational hypertension before 30 weeks of pregnancy.2
- About 25% of women with gestational hypertension develop preeclampsia.3
- Women who experience gestational hypertension are more likely to develop hypertension later in life.4
