Research Notes on What Diseases Can You Get from Smoking
Smoking is one of the leading causes of disease in the United States, affecting nearly 438,000 people. Common diseases caused by smoking include stroke, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ulcers, and peripheral artery disease.1 Those who quit smoking can greatly reduce their risk of developing these conditions.2
Fast Facts:
- Smoking is also linked to many cancers such as lung cancer, cervical cancer, throat cancer, and bladder cancer.1
- Women who smoke may increase their risk of preterm labor, low birth weight babies, and even fetal death.1
- Living around smokers can increase the risk of developing lung cancer and heart disease due to the dangerous effects of second-hand smoke. 1
