Research Notes on What Causes Diabetes

The cause of diabetes depends on the type of diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, or juvenile onset, the body's immune system causes the destruction of beta cells in the islet tissue of the pancreas; the pancreas cannot produce insulin, the hormone that helps metabolize glucose without the beta cells. Type 1 diabetics cannot make their own insulin.1 With type 2 diabetes, also called mature onset, the pancreas does secrete insulin. Not enough glucose is metabolized and it accumulates in the blood stream causing type 2 diabetics to develop hypoglycemia.2 Diabetes insipidus may be caused by a head injury or brain surgery that leads to problems with the hypothalamus. When the hypothalamus does not produce enough antidiuretic hormone, patients with diabetes insipidus find themselves wanting to drink excessive amounts of water and urinate frequently.3

Fast Facts:

  • 95% of diabetics have type 2 diabetes.2
  • Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise and a healthy diet can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.2
  • Most people who have type 1 diabetes have no family history of the disease.1
