Research Notes on What Caused Michael Jackson's Death

The Los Angeles County coroner has official determined pop icon Michael Jackson's death to be a homicide. Ending months of speculation, the coroner confirmed that Jackson died due to a lethal amount of propofol leading to cardiac arrest. Various other medications which Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered were found in the singer's blood and were listed as contributing factors to his untimely death. Dr. Murray has reportedly admitted to administering propofol, diazepam, lorazepam, and midazolam in the hours before Jackson's death. Murray is currently under investigation for manslaughter though no charges have been filed at this time.1

Fast Facts:

  • Lidocaine, ephedrine, and a decongestant were also found in Jackson's system, though they are believed to have played no role in his death.2
  • Propfol is normally used to anesthetize patients for surgical procedures and its use outside a health care facility is virtually unheard of.2
  • The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that several other physicians are also being investigated in conjunction with Jackson's death.2
  • Jackson was 50 at the time of his death. The coroner's statement came only one day before the megastar's 51st birthday.
