Research Notes on What Are Statins
Statins, also called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of drugs which lower cholesterol levels.1 They decrease the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other coronary artery diseases.2 They block the production of cholesterol in the liver. Statins are the most potent cholesterol-lowering agents available. Statins also slightly raise levels of high-density-lipoprotein ("good" cholesterol).
Fast Facts:
- Statins are not recommended for those that are pregnant or with active or chronic liver disease.3
- Side effects are uncommon but include some mild abdominal discomfort and bowel irregularity.
- Forms of statins include lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), rosuvastatin (Crestor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), and fluvastatin (Lescol).1
