Research Notes on West Nile Virus
Birds are the primary host of West Nile virus (WNV), but it can infect humans and horses as well as a few other mammals. The route of infection is through the bite of an infected mosquito. WNV is a form of encephalitis, and is similar to the dengue fever virus.
Fast Facts:
- Most people infected with WNV will not become ill and will not know they had the virus.
- Approximately 20% of people who get WNV will develop West Nile fever.
- Less than 1% of people who contract WNV will develop a serious disease, which can be fatal.
- The best prevention is to avoid mosquito bites.
