Research Notes on Weight Loss Tips for People with Bipolar Disorder
Many adults with bipolar disorder are curious about weight loss tips. This is because many bipolar individuals are on medications such as mood stabilizers, antidepressants and antipsychotic medications to help stabilize their symptoms, and those drugs tend to cause weight gain.1 According to the guidelines of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), treatment of overweight or obese adults is a two-step process involving assessment and treatment management.2
Fast Facts:
- People with bipolar disorder will have to make dietary changes due to weight gain caused by prescribed medications.3
- Physical activity and diet can prevent weight gain caused by antipsychotic medications.4
- The obesity field recently has developed programs emphasizing “lifestyle changes” (e.g., diet, exercise, and problem-solving skills) to successfully manage weight and such programs can be adapted for patients with bipolar disorder and other psychotic conditions.5
- Research has shown that a lifestyle intervention (including nutrition and fitness education sessions, the American Heart Association step 2 diet, and an individualized exercise program), especially when combined with the drug metformin, can be effective in curbing weight loss for people with bipolar disorder.6
- According to the NHLBI's guidelines, treatment strategies for overweight and obesity include modifications in diet, behavior, and physical activity. Combined therapy that incorporates all three approaches is most successful.2
- OrganizedWisdom has a self-assessment that can help you figure out if your medication might be causing weight gain.
