Research Notes on Bipolar Medications and Weight Gain
One of the side effects from certain types of bipolar medications is the possibility of weight gain. Atypical antipsychotics are the bipolar medications that are most often associated with weight gain. Research has not discovered a conclusive reason as to why these drugs for bipolar disorder contribute to weight gain.1
Fast Facts:
- Weight gain from these medications can be serious enough to cause health problems such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoarthritis, and heart disease.2
- A healthy diet and exercise regimen can help prevent weight gain.3
- Weight gain can lead to stress which could lead to binge eating, thus creating a vicious cycle for the person suffering from bipolar disorder.2
