Research Notes on Weight Gain
Weight gain can be from an increase in body fluid, muscle mass, or fat.1 Unintentional weight gain can come from simply eating too many calories than the body needs.2 Weight gain can also be a side effect of medicines, or a symptom of disease.
Fast Facts:
- Several endocrine diseases, such as Cushing syndrome and hypothyroidism, cause weight gain.2
- Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, can cause weight gain as suffers may overeat when depressed or eat due to stress.3
- Medications that can cause weight gain include: corticosteroids, cyproheptadine, lithium, tranquilizers, phenothiazines, and some antidepressants.2
- Weight gain is a normal part of being pregnant.1
