Research Notes on Sneezing and Watery Eyes

Sneezing and watery eyes are a symptom of allergic rhinitis. These symptoms usually occur within minutes or hours after breathing in an allergen. Sneezing is usually repetitive. Watery eyes can be caused by a histamine response, or turn into what is called allergic pinkeye (a non-contagious conjunctivitis).1 Allergic rhinitis causes sneezing and watery eyes along with other symptoms. The condition is also referred to as hay fever when the allergen is pollen. Sneezing and watery eyes can also be a cold symptom. Many people have a hard time telling the difference between hay fever and a cold. A cold usually presents with a thicker discharge. If a fever is present, that will also indicate a cold. Symptoms will immediately occur when exposed to an allergen, and one to three days after exposure to a cold virus. Allergies will last as long as there is exposure, while a cold will last approximately 5-7 days.2

Fast Facts:

  • Sneezing and watery eyes are accompanied by a runny nose if connected to rhinitis (inflammation and irritation of the nasal lining).1
  • Hay fever symptoms affect about one out of every five people.1
  • Hay fever can occur at any age, but is most likely to develop in childhood or early adulthood.1
