Research Notes on Wal-Mart Supports Obama's Health Care Plan

Wal-Mart, the nation's largest private employer, endorsed President Obama's Health Care Plan on June 30, 2009.1 The health care plan will mandate that employers provide medical coverage to the approximate forty-six million Americans who are uninsured. Wal-Mart currently offers company-provided health care to 1.4 million employees.2

Fast Facts:

  • In 2006, Wal-Mart fought Maryland's efforts to enforce the increase in employer's contributions for health care coverage.1
  • Later, Wal-Mart joined with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Center for American Progress to help the initiative for universal health care coverage by 2012 for all Americans.3
  • Wal-Mart also promoted their own $4 generic drug program.2
  • Under the Obama Administration's proposed plan, large companies would be mandated to provide or contribute to health care coverage for employees. However, it's possible that small businesses may be exempt or pay less.2
