Research Notes on Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome
Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome is the most common type of chronic vulvo-vaginal pain.1 It is described as a painful response to touch or pressure around the vaginal opening.2 Symptoms include vulval and vaginal pain which is worse during menstruation and pain during sex.3
Fast Facts:
- Affects approximately 10% of women at some point in life.1
- Medications such as amitriptyline, estrogen, and nytroglycerin are routinely used for treatment.3
- Some women have found relief in using topical capsaicin to relieve the pain of vulvar vestibulitis syndrome.4
