Research Notes on Voltaren-XR and Pregnancy
Like most other NSAIDs, Voltaren-XR is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Voltaren-XR as a category C medication, indicating that the drug may present a risk of birth defects to a developing fetus. Most physicians do not recommend Voltaren-XR during the third trimester of pregnancy due to the possibility of a prolonged labor which can be harmful to both mother and baby.1
Fast Facts:
- NSAID medications such as Voltaren-XR are known to increase the possibility of heart problems in an unborn child.2
- Voltaren-XR is known to be excreted in the breast milk of breastfeeding mothers. If you must take Voltaren-XR, your physician may recommend that you switch to bottle feeding your baby.3
- Voltaren-XR is a brand name of the generic medication diclofenac. Your physician may recommend this medication if you suffer from chronic pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or any other chronic condition associated with pain and inflammation within the body.3
