Research Notes on Vitamin D and Dementia
Vitamin D is essential in promoting the absorption of calcium in the body. However, in excessive amounts, vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia which is noted to be one of the causes and risk factors for developing dementia. When too much calcium is present in the blood, it can cause calcium deposition on vessel walls causing loss of elasticity and narrowing of the blood vessels. This may result in lesions that can damage the brain.
