Research Notes on Vitamin D and Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a condition wherein the digestive tract becomes inflamed, most commonly the lower portion of the small intestine (ileum). This is a painful condition and may cause frequent bowel movements, or diarrhea. Nutrient deficiency is common in individuals with this condition, vitamin D being one of the nutrients lacking or is decreased in levels in Crohn's disease. Patients are advised to take vitamin D supplements to prevent bone mass density loss, which is a common complication of the disease.
