Research Notes on Vitamin C
Vitamin C -- also called ascorbic acid -- is a water-soluble vitamin. It aides in the growth and repair of bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels.1 Since the human body does not synthesize vitamin C, we must get it through our diets.
Fast Facts:
- Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant.2
- A deficiency of vitamin C causes scurvy.
- The use of vitamin C in preventing or treating the common cold remains controversial.1
- Citrus fruits, such as oranges, are the best known food sources, but many fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin C.
