Research Notes on Adult Vital Signs
Vital signs are taken by health care providers to assess and monitor a patient's basic body functions. The vital signs that are most commonly taken are blood pressure, respiratory rate, body temperature, and pulse rate. To take these measurements, the health care provider uses a thermometer, sphygmomanometer, and a watch.1
Fast Facts:
- A normal systolic blood pressure reading in adults is 90 to 140 mmHg.2
- A normal diastolic blood pressure reading is 60 to 90 mmHg.2
- A normal respiratory rate is 12 to 20 breaths per minute.2
- A normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees orally.3
- A normal pulse rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute.2
