Research Notes on Viruses
Viruses are strictly parasites. They must have a living host to multiply. A host can be a plant, animal or human. There are hundreds of thousands of different types of viruses. The immune system can fight off some viruses within days or weeks. Some viruses need to be treated with medications that are antiviral. Some viruses can cause chronic infections, where the virus continues to live in the body despite the defense mechanisms of the immune system.
Fast Facts:
- Viruses are the smallest microorganisms to exist on Earth.
- Antibiotics will not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
- Vaccines have been developed for many viral diseases.
