Research Notes on Violet
In addition to looking beautiful in a garden, the common violet has medicinal properties which herbalists have taken advantage of for years. The flowers and leaves of the violet plant can be made into a syrup for cough and lung congestion issues.1 The petals are often candied and used as cake decorations or in salads.1
Fast Facts:
- Leaves contain an aspirin-like substance which is effective to remedy headaches and (some say) hangovers.2
- Made into an ointment, violet is used to treat various skin eruptions.3
- Vomiting may result from eating excessive amounts of violets.3
