Research Notes on Video Games and Pain Management
Researchers say that playing an engaging video game may actually distract someones attention away from a painful activity and help people with chronic pain conditions, especially children. A study found that regardless of a person's personality or gaming experience, playing an active video game reduced their pain rating and increased pain tolerance compared with the other conditions.1
Fast Facts:
- Video games can give patients a way to gain some control over their suffering while waiting for treatment by specialists.2
- There has been no long term follow-up and no robust randomised controlled trials of using video games to control pain.3
- Effective therapy for pain management, regardless of aggressive or competitive tendencies.4
