Research Notes on Very Low Density Lipoprotein

Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) is one of the major types of lipoproteins. It is created in the liver and converted in the blood stream to low-density lipoprotein (LDL).1 VLDL is composed of mainly triglycerides classifying it as a "very bad" cholesterol.2 It functions as an internal transport mechanism for lipids in the body.1 Diet, exercise, and medications are ways of lowering VLDL.3

Fast Facts:

  • Obesity, diabetes, certain cancers, and high-carbohydrate meals can raise VLDL.4
  • High VLDL is a contributing cause to cholesterol buildup in the arteries, this lso raises the risk of heart disease and stroke.5
  • There is no specific test for VLDL, it is measured by a percentage of triglyceride levels.2
