Research Notes on Ventilators
A medical ventilator is an automatic machine that is used to bring air in and out of the lungs of patients who are unable to breathe correctly on their own. They are used while patients are under anesthesia, in home care, emergency medicine, or intensive care medicine.1 Ventilators can be used with only a face mask or by using an endotracheal tube, depending on severity of the case.2
Fast Facts:
- While ventilated by an endotracheal tube some patients may need to be sedated to reduce stress and anxiety.2
- When a endotracheal tube is used there is a risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia, tracheal stenosis, vocal cord injury, or hypotension.2
- Backup mechanisms are used to assure the machine will operate correctly in the event of power failures or faulty equipment.1
