Research Notes on Venogram Uses
A venogram is the gold standard for detecting deep vein thrombosis (DVT).1 It is an x-ray that uses a contrast dye to increase the visibility of veins.2 A venogram is also used to locate healthy veins for medical surgeries and procedures.3 Performed in a hospital or clinic, the procedure generally takes approximately thirty to forty-five minutes.4
Fast Facts:
- Doppler ultrasound is sometimes used in lieu of a venogram in diagnosing DVT.4
- Surgeons may use this procedure to find healthy veins for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.3
- Also used to place catheters, intravenous lines, filters, and stents in the proper location.3
- Clot formation, allergic reaction, and kidney problems are complications that may occur from a venogram.5
- Observation after the procedure is required for reactions such as infection or bleeding from the injection site.5
