Research Notes on Venogram Risks
As with many procedures, there are risks associated with a venogram. These risks include phlebitis, deep vein thrombosis, and tissue damage. Patients may also develop an allergic reaction to the dye used, however this has only been reported in eight percent of patients.1
Fast Facts:
- Other rare complications that could occur after a venogram include blood clots or an infection.2
- Women who are pregnant should consult with their physician, as the procedure can increase the risk for birth defects.2
- Patients taking Glucophage (metformin) should consult with their physician before having a venogram, as there is an increased risk for developing kidney failure.3
