Research Notes on Venlafaxine Uses
Venlafaxine is prescribed to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder.1 It is classified as a selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).2 While not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), off-label uses for venlafaxine include diabetic neuropathy, migraine prevention, reducing hot flashes during menopause, reducing cataplexy associated with narcolepsy, obsessive-compulsive disorder, orthostatic intolerance, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.3

- Venlafaxine is a generic for the brand name Effexor.4
- Venlafaxine may increase suicidal ideation when treatment is first started, especially in individuals under the age of twenty-four.1
- Venlafaxine increases the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine to help maintain mental balance.5
- Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, constipation, blurred vision, decreased sexual libido, and weight changes.1
