Research Notes on Veins
A vein is a blood vessel in the circulatory system that carries blood to the heart. Veins should not be confused with arteries which carry oxygenated blood to the tissues. The exception to this is the pulmonary and umbilical veins which both carry oxygenated blood. Veins are used medically as access to the blood stream for the withdrawal of blood for testing purposes, or the intravenous delivery of fluid, electrolytes, nutrition, and medications through injection with a syringe, or by inserting a catheter.1
Fast Facts:
- The majority of veins in the body carry low-oxygen blood from the tissues back to the heart.1
- The total capacity of the veins is more than sufficient to hold the entire blood volume of the body.1
- The most common vein problems are spider veins or varicose veins.1
- Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein.1
- Phlebology is the medical study that involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of venous origin.1
