Research Notes on Vegetarian Glucosamine
Vegetarian or vegan glucosamine is currently available in the United States. Glucosamine is usually made from components of shellfish; the vegetarian version is made through the use of corn or wheat.1 Vegetarian glucosamine not only allows supplement use for people with a vegan or vegetarian diet, but also allows for people who are allergic to shellfish or wish to keep Kosher.2 Vegetarian glucosamine is available from a variety of sources online and in some health food or nutrition stores.

- Vegetarian glucosamine works the same as traditional glucosamine.3
- Many companies selling vegetarian or vegan glucosamine have certification from the Vegan Society or a kosher certification.
- Typical adult dosage of glucosamine is 500 mg three times a day or 1,500 mg once a day.4
- Vegetarian glucosamine, like all other supplements, is not regulated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, purity, or composition.
