Research Notes on Varicocele

A varicocele is a mass of enlarged and dilated veins in the spermatic cord in the scrotum which reduces the flow of blood in the testicles.1 Usually developing around the time of puberty, varicocele will affect about 10-20% of all males.1 While the issue of whether a varicocele is a cause of male infertility is still in question, approximately 40% of infertile men suffer from a varicocele.1

  • About 85% of varicoceles develop in the left testicle.1
  • The sudden appearance of a varicocele in an older man may be indicative of a kidney tumor.2
  • Symptoms include visible, twisted veins in the scrotum, infertility, or a testicular lump.3
