Research Notes on Vanishing Twin Syndrome Forums
Vanishing Twin Syndrome (VTS) is a phenomenon in which a pregnancy is diagnosed as twins and then one twin seemingly disappears and only a singleton birth occurs.1 The fetus which disappears may be noticed through an early miscarriage, or the tissue may be partially absorbed by either the placenta or even by the remaining twin.1 Parents who have previously been told there are multiple babies may experience grief over the loss of the one, and research now shows that the remaining twin may experience significant emotional stress in later years.1
Fast Facts:
- It is estimated that 1 of every 8 people started life as a twin.1
- VTS may play a role in up to 50% of all assisted ovulation pregnancies.1
- Occurs more often in mothers of advanced maternal age.1
