Research Notes on Vaginitis
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina that is usually caused by infection or a change in the balance of vaginal bacteria. After menopause, vaginitis may occur as a result of a decrease in estrogen levels. The most common types of vaginitis are yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and atrophic vaginitis.1
Fast Facts:
- Vaginal discharge that has an unpleasant odor, itching in the vaginal area, and discomfort during sex are all possible symptoms of vaginitis.2
- Wearing clothing that holds moisture should be avoided to prevent certain types of vaginitis.2
- Diabetes that is not controlled can increase the risk of developing a yeast infection.3
- Practicing safe sex can help prevent types of vaginitis that are transmitted sexually.3
