Research Notes on Vaginal Self-Examination
A vaginal self-examination is a way in which women can see the hidden parts of the anatomy which are typically only evaluated once a year by a gynecologist. Some women routinely check cervical mucous due to practicing fertility awareness. In order to properly perform a vaginal self-exam, tools such as a flashlight, mirror and plastic speculum are needed.1
Fast Facts:
- Reasons for doing a vaginal self-exam include helping a woman learn more about her body, and checking for abnormal discharge, vaginal sores or other problems.2
- The appearance of the vaginal area and cervix may have an altered tint during pregnancy.3
- Test is best performed after menstruation is over.4
