Research Notes on Vaginal Delivery
A vaginal delivery is the most common form of childbirth and is usually considered the safest for both mother and baby. A vaginal birth occurs during the second stage of labor after the cervix has effaced and dilated to 10cm.1 Vaginal delivery may be accomplished with or without the use of pain medications.
Fast Facts:
- An assisted vaginal delivery occurs when the physician needs to use forceps or a vacuum device to help the baby out of the birth canal.2
- The act of having a vaginal delivery after a previous Cesarean delivery is called a VBAC.
- Although a woman begins the process of a vaginal delivery, a Cesarean delivery may be necessary.
