Research Notes on Vaccines
Vaccines are used to improve immunity to a particular disease. The immune system recognizes vaccine agents as foreign, destroys them, and develops antibodies to that disease. A vaccine must contain at least one antigen from the bacteria or virus. Vaccines do not guarantee complete protection from a disease.
Fast Facts:
- The first vaccine (Smallpox) was developed in 1796.
- The word vaccine is derived from vacca, the Latin word for cow.
- By the age of 2 years, a child may receive up to 23 shots since many vaccines need to be administered more than once.
